Midnight Boy - Roll With It
Posted on 16:49 by Unknown
"Keep your head up high"
I've been looking forward to this project for awhile now. Midnight Boy is the new alias of Sweden's Johan Krafman, who I wrote about on the blog a few years ago. He's got some excellent Tony Nilsson penned tracks, but never released a full album. Now, with Midnight Boy, he's gone full on 80's with an excellent, funky slice of synthpop. This is my kind of thing, through and through. From the polished, crisp production to the confident vocals and oh-so-catchy hook, the song has it all. A video's out later in the week and I'm hoping this begins a new stage in Krafman's career. Everything seems right for a big pop splash in Sweden (and hopefully beyond). Mostly, though, I just selfishly want more music from him!

Tyson - Mr. Rain
Posted on 14:02 by Unknown
"All my tears went dry, so I said goodbye"
It seems like I've been writing about Tyson forever (and with good reason). It started with Unklejam in 2006, which he was a part of, and continued on during the following years with his slow dribble of excellent singles. I knew that he released a full-length last year, but I figured I'd heard most of the songs (especially the good ones). But then, his newest single (the fabulous Mr. Rain) became an unexpected hit in Germany and I'm back writing about his again! This is the very best track he's given us yet, a slow-building, pulsating 80's electro anthem that sounds exactly like Tina Turner circa the Private Dancer era. Nobody is doing anything like this right now. It's flamboyant, passionate and really just a lot of fun. Honestly, all it takes is one listen to this track and you will be impossibly addicted.

Manda - Sweetest Heartbreak
Posted on 09:36 by Unknown
"I'm like a devil in disguise"
I loved Manda on the first season of Swedish X-factor. I thought she had the perfect pop voice and picked great songs to perform. She was definitely a favorite, but even so, I knew she wouldn't go all that far in the competition. I was right, as she finished sixth, but I would never have expected that she would be the first one from the show to release a debut single. It's a pity this wasn't out in time for Melodifestivalen, as it would have fit right in. However, it doesn't appear that she needed that extra promotion, because as of this writing the song's sitting on top of the Swedish itunes chart! Sweetest Heartbreak is an instantly catchy, effortlessly sung, radio pop/rock track. It's the kind of stuff Sweden chucks out in its sleep, and that's one of the reasons I love the country so much. I look forward to an album, especially since a couple of months ago, I'd never have thought we'd see one!

Meat Loaf - I Would Do Anything For Love (SuperCHEAP! Remix)
Posted on 16:09 by Unknown
"I would do anything for love, but I won't do that"
I am a massive fan of Meat Loaf. I am also a massive fan of dance music and remixes. As a result, I'm always on the lookout for Meat Loaf remixes. I'm aware that this is a... niche "genre" at best, and that would explain why there aren't many out there. But, I'm absolutely in love with the idea of reinventing classic rock for the dancefloor. It's not the easiest thing to find, and I always get excited when I discover something that makes me sit up and pay attention. I stumbled across the soundcloud page of SuperOkMusic--and this song specifically--and instantly fell in love. They take the piano hook and the main refrain of the track and use it to structure a dance remix that doesn't betray the original song's sensibilities. For now, it's the closest I'm going to get to Meat Loaf himself recording a club album, which I still think would be the most awesome thing ever.

Pop Blitz 3/19/13
Posted on 10:27 by Unknown
Bruno Mars - When I Was Your Man
I've tried to get into the Bruno Mars thing, but honestly, I just find him to be a second rate Prince/Michael Jackson clone. The enormous success of this track baffles me. He's got absolutely no edge. C
The Saturdays - What About Us
This is another pop group I've tried to love without much success. That said, this is one of their best singles. It's hooky throughout and the melody doesn't get lost in the production (which is admittedly trend-conscious). B+
Nicole Scherzinger - Boomerang
I'm pleased to see that she's sticking with straight-up pop, now that she's gained a foothold on the UK audience. This isn't up there with her best, but it's a fun bubblegum pop track. B
Pink - Just Give Me A Reason (ft. Nate Ruess)
I'm not much of a Pink fan anymore, but I do love Nate's singing and (especially) songwriting, and that's what makes this single special. It's her best in years, with a strong, theatrical melody and rock production. A-
Pitbull - Feel This Moment (ft. Christina Aguilera)
This is just offensive, mostly because sampling A-Ha was a great idea used/abused for such a crappy song. Seriously, Pitbull needs to go away and take Christina with him. D+
Demi Lovato - Heart Attack
Not into it. More and more, Lovato's singing voice just irritates me. The melody and production seem so dated to me, and not in a good way. It's got that uninteresting, dirge-like sound to it--just kind of plods along until it's over. C
Justin Timberlake - Mirrors
I can't stand the guy, and judging from the samples of the album, it sounds absolutely atrocious and self-indulgent. This track is the silver lining, though, as it's the best single he's released since his debut. I'm even forced to like it a little bit. He's still a sorry excuse for a pop star, though. B+
Now it's your chance to have your say. Which track is your favorite?

Semi Precious Weapons - Aviation High
Posted on 17:22 by Unknown
"I find myself counting the days"
To be honest, I always wanted to love Semi Precious Weapons instead of just liking them. They've got a fantastic image, a charismatic front man, and a clear love of classic glam rock/punk. For me, though, something has always been missing. But now the band are back with a complete reinvention of sound, which is enough to pique my interest again. They've gone from brash punk to mellow, new wavey synth pop. It's an interesting transition, though not altogether unexpected (they had been touring with Lady Gaga, after all). The song itself is a taster for the new album, which has yet to be released, and I hope it's not a red herring. I would love to hear some upbeat, rock-influenced electronica from these guys. I think they're totally capable of making an awesome album in that style. Justin Tranter's certainly got the vocals and persona for it.

Kongos - I'm Only Joking
Posted on 17:25 by Unknown
"I don't believe a thing I said"
This song is over a year old, but I'm going to feature it today anyway. I really try to discover what's going on with music around the entire world, but there are some regions (Europe, Korea, Australia) that I naturally gravitate towards more strongly. I am, however, always on the lookout for good, new African music. I love the natural rhythms and textures found in a lot of the music in Africa, but I struggle to find songs that I like enough to feature on the blog. So, I get really excited when something like this comes along. South Africa seems to have a thriving, if somewhat little known, music scene. Among its many bands is Kongos, who released this amazingly catchy track at the end of 2011. The song's hypnotic drums were the first thing to strike me, but then I was lured into the quirky, playful chorus. It's like a mysterious circus sideshow wrapped into a song.

A Standing Ovation For Scandinavia
Posted on 10:26 by Unknown
After a year or so on the sidelines, Scandinavia and Northern Europe is back when it comes to fantastic pop music. Honestly, in the past few months, I've seen more great music come out of the region than in all of last year. It's really an amazing resurgence, and kind of reminds me of when I first got into Scandinavian music a decade ago.
I just wanted to give some of these fantastic songs another look today, because each and every one of them is totally special. Not only that, but most are from artists I'd never featured on the blog before, giving me a lot of hope for the future of European pop music. And the best part is, it's only March! I can't wait to see what's still waiting for us.
Nicole Sabouné - Conquer Or Suffer (Sweden)
Isac Elliot - New Way Home (Finland)
Ace Wilder - Do It (Sweden)
Ulrik Munther - Tell The World I'm Here (Sweden)
Darin - En Apa Som Liknar Dig (Sweden)
Blitzkids Mvt. - Heart On The Line (Germany)
Le Kid - We Are Young (Sweden)
Anton Ewald - Begging (Sweden)
The Royal Concept - World On Fire (Sweden)
Ben Ivory - The Righteous Ones (Germany)
Margaret Berger - I Feed You My Love (Norway)
Studio Killers - All Men Are Pigs (Denmark)
Krista Siegfrids - Marry Me (Finland)
Martin Rolinski - In And Out Of Love (Sweden)

Kite - The Rhythm
Posted on 09:39 by Unknown
"Push me through the people"
Kite are back! I have an interesting relationship with this band. Whenever I listen to them, a part of me aches, just wishing that singer Nicklas Stenemo was still with the Mo, performing the kind of pop rock that he did so well. But another part of me can really appreciate this kind of experimental electronic sound as well. To my ears, the duo has never eclipsed their debut single, Ways To Dance, but this new song is a step in the right direction. The vocals are clean, the guitar riffs give it a more organic feel, and the beat is simple, yet propulsive. Melodically, it's kind of similar to With Every Heartbeat, yet it sounds nothing like that. It's got that same kind of building, repetitive tune, though, that becomes more cathartic as the song goes on. It's great stuff. A new EP should be out in May and this song is available for free download via the soundcloud link below.

Melodifestivalen 2013: Post Final Wrap-Up
Posted on 10:19 by Unknown
Melodifestivalen is over for another year, which always makes me a little sad because I definitely look forward to it more than Eurovision. But, I am happy that we're now at the point that we should be: enjoying the songs for what they are, rather than pitting them against each other.
I started this year's MF coverage thoroughly underwhelmed, but something happened as the week's went on that somehow gave us a Final that was quite strong. Although there obviously wasn't anything as good as last year's Euphoria, I'd argue that, song for song, this year's Final was stronger than last year's. And even though I can't say that my favorite won, in the seven years I've been following and covering the competition, I've never seen such exciting, nail-biting voting results.
Here were the final stats:
(Jury + Public = Total)
1. Robin Stjernberg (91 + 75 = 166)
2. Yohio (30 + 103 = 133)
3. Ulrik Munther (82 + 44 = 126)
4. Anton Ewald (49 + 59 = 108)
5. Louise Hoffsten (36 + 49 = 85)
6. Sean Banan (37 + 41 = 78)
7. Ralf Gyllenhammer (33 + 40 = 73)
8. David Lindgren (57 + 12 = 69)
9. State Of Drama (50 + 18 = 68)
10. Ravaillacz (8 + 32 = 40)
The most interesting info to pull from this:
* In my opinion, the voters got the top four right... just not in the right order.
* I'm shocked at Ralf's low placing, particularly with the Swedish voters. How does a presumed favorite fall this far without any similar act competing against him?
* I was much better at predicting the bottom three than the top three this year.
* David Lindgren's shocking 12 points from the voting public show that he was indeed the victim of vote-splitting, as I predicted. Also, apparently I'm not the only one who finds him unlikable.
* The big controversy will be, of course, the disconnect between the Int. Juries and the public. The juries really didn't like Yohio, and the Swedes really did. I hope they don't cave in and get rid of the juries. I think the contest needs an outside perspective.
* Poor Ulrik landed right where I predicted he would, and right where he did last year (even though the song was vastly superior this time). He did increase one place with the public vote this year (he came sixth last year, and was fifth this time -- against much tougher competition)
* I am baffled by the points that the juries gave to Sean. Hopefully his placing in the bottom half yesterday will be the nail in the coffin of his MF career.
* The two biggest losers of the night? David and State of Drama, who both flashed rude expressions when their meager votes were announced.
And now, a look at the winner.
I feel largely ambivalent about Robin, actually. It was exciting to see a dark horse triumph unexpectedly, but his song was only my 4th or 5th favorite in the competition. Plus, the bitter side of me thinks that if Robin hadn't been in the final, his votes may have gone to Ulrik, paving the way for him to win. Of course, we'll never know, but I can speculate :)
The song is good, the performance is good. He seems nice, if a little needy. There's just something about the whole package that hasn't connected with me, no matter how hard I try. I predict it going top ten in Eurovision, but not winning (which, honestly, is probably what Sweden wants anyway). In the grand scheme of MF winners, it's no atrocity like This Is My Life, but it's certainly no Euphoria either. I can be happy with it, if not excited.
I do, however, quite like this remixed version. The added hook takes it past its adult-contemporary leanings and gives it more oomph.
And finally, my top ten songs of MF 2013 (likely to change):
1. Ulrik Munther - Tell The World I'm Here
2. Anton Ewald - Begging
3. Martin Rolinski - In And Out Of Love
4. Behrang Miri - Jalla Dansa Sawa
5. Yohio - Heartbreak Hotel
6. Army Of Lovers - Rockin' The Ride
7. Robin Stjernberg - You
8. Ralf Gyllenhammar - Bed On Fire
9. Eric Gadd - Vi Kommer Aldrig Att Förlora
10. Caisa & Michael Feiner - We're Still Kids

Melodifestivalen 2013: The Final
Posted on 10:59 by Unknown
Who's ready to watch Yohio win? Just kidding... maybe there will be an upset? I've made it quite clear that I'd love to see Ulrik or Anton take the title, but we'll see...
* My god that's a huge arena! The kid hosts are very cute. They remind me of Awa and Isak of this year's XF Swe
* Is Kisses Of Fire really one of Abba's popular songs? I never thought so, but they used it for this and it was also featured prominently in the 2004 final. Was it a single in Sweden? Regardless, it's a great track.
ULRIK: If only this could win. Either way, I'm still obsessed with the song and the fact that his entry music is Calleth You, Cometh I still gets me excited. Vocals were on point tonight and the changes in the staging were interesting, if not entirely necessary. Come on, voters!!
DAVID: I find this guy so annoying. His presentation is so incredibly needy. It's a shame, because the song's not bad. He just makes the most irritating facial expressions when he performs. Is it just me?
STATE OF DRAMA: I could see this coming last place, honestly. It's a nice breakthrough for them, but the song is so, so boring and dated. I think it'll probably finish between 7th and 9th, but who knows.
ANTON: Huge applause at the announcement of his name. Could this guy actually win and become the first Andra Chansen victor? I'm not sure I see it happening, but it would be a nice surprise. The hair looks better today. Whatever happens, I'm excited at the prospect of an album by this guy. (btw... where was the awkward back/side flip towards the end? Instead, we got a really weird little twirl)
LOUISE: Now that I think about it, my former predictions might have been too optimistic. The audience certainly wasn't that enthused. It will be interesting to see where this finishes. It ain't winning. That much is for sure.
RALF: I feel like svt is really pushing him so far in this broadcast. First the gag at the beginning, then the Danny fireman outfit. I'm still about 95% sure that this will place somewhere in the top three. Could it win? Erm... I'd rather it not, but it wouldn't be a total travesty either. The audience wasn't quite as enthusiastic as I thought they would be, though.
RAVAILLACS: Like State Of Drama, this feels like a last place finisher, and I think the two will be duking it out for that... honor. I think anyone voting for them would vote for Louise or Ralf instead, and I don't see how the International Juries could give them any points.
SEAN: Agh! Get it off! Get it off!!!
ROBIN: I still don't understand why he enters to "Dude Looks Like A Lady." It just draws thoughts and comparisons that he probably doesn't want. I'm afraid I get the feeling like his thunder from last week has been stolen by Anton and he may suffer because of that. We'll see. This is maybe the most unpredictable entry in the final this year. Could do really well, could absolutely bomb. There's a slight bit of desperation in his performance that I just can't help but feel is somewhat off-putting.
YOHIO: Our presumed frontrunner. I was interested to see what the audience reception would be, and from the outset it doesn't seem to be as strong as I'd anticipated. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean anything (though going by applause in the arena, Anton has to be the clear frontrunner). I'm still predicting this to win, but I feel like there might be a little more wiggle room than we thought.
* Now comes the really interesting part. I am so, SO curious about how the International Juries went.
* AAAHHHH! Sara Dawn Finer!! Love her. This is a funny bit.
* Damn, Euphoria is such an amazing song. This was a stunning performance.
RESULTS - INTERNATIONAL JURIES
Cyprus - 12 points: Sean Banan (really?!?)
Spain - 12 points: Louise (weird...)
Italy - 12 points: Ulrik (yes!)
Iceland - 12 points: Robin (these are all over the place)
Malta - 12 points: David (jesus... this is so weird)
Ukraine - 12 points: Ralf
Israel - 12 points: Robin (could he win this?)
France - 12 points: Ulrik (come on, voters!)
England - 12 points: Ulrik (yes!!!!)
Croatia - 12 points: Robin
Germany - 12 points: David (wtf...)
So here's what we've got, and it's totally unexpected:
1. Robin
2. Ulrik
3. David
Meanwhile, Yohio is languishing toward the bottom. Can he still win? I REALLY hope Ulrik has a shot now.
* Carola is an amazing singer, but this is kind of a mess. And those hot pants! Wow.
FINAL RESULTS:
1. Robin
2. Yohio
3. Ulrik (damn!)
4. Anton
5. Louise
6. Sean Banan
7. Ralf
8. David
9. State Of Drama
10. Ravaillacz
Well WTF?!?! I don't think anybody expected that! Not my favorite song, for sure, but not an embarrassment, either. The first Andra Chansen to win the Final. He's SHOCKED. I think we all are, to be honest.
That's it for another year, guys! I'll be back either tomorrow or Monday to discuss the results in more detail :)

Melodifestivalen 2013: Final Predictions
Posted on 17:02 by Unknown
After tomorrow, Melodifestivalen will be over for another year. Although I complained a lot about the quality of entries during the first few heats, it's actually not such a bad final line-up this year. There's only one song I can't stand, and four or five that I like quite a bit. Unfortunately, my dream finishing order is not likely to be what actually happens tomorrow (though there's always a chance... especially with the international juries in play).
Everyone's saying it's Yohio's to lose, and I agree. But wouldn't it be fun if there was an upset? I'm not saying Yohio would be a terrible winner. I just think there are more interesting songs to choose from. It says something about Sweden that a skinny, effeminate, make-up wearing teen is the consensus choice. I can't hardly be mad at that, even though he's not my favorite act this year. Here's what I would like to see happen and what I think will happen tomorrow:
What Should Happen:
1. Ulrik Munther - Tell The World I'm Here (far and away my favorite entry in the final, and my favorite entry overall)
2. Anton Ewald - Beggin (unlike many others apparently, I actually love the song. Plus, it's the only act with decent dancing)
3. Yohio - Heartbreak Hotel (see? I don't hate it. I could be happy if it won. It's just not my favorite)
4. Robin Stjernberg - You (it's growing on me. I like the song, but I find his performance a little needy)
5. Ralf Gyllenhammer - Bed On Fire (I like the song, but I'm not too impressed with him)
6. Louise Hoffsten - Only The Dead Fish Follow The Stream (it's alright)
7. David Lindgren - Skyline (the song's okay, but I find him really obnoxious)
8. Ravaillacz - En Riktig Jävla Schlager (it's fun on its own terms, but just shouldn't have been in the final)
9. State Of Drama - Falling (snorefest. Feels like a non-entity)
10. Sean Banan - Copacabanana (horrific, unbearable, hideous, etc.)
What I Think Will Happen:
1. Yohio - Heartbreak Hotel (should receive widespread support in the public vote, and top three in juries)
2. Ralf Gyllenhammer - Bed On Fire (may become the Caroline Af Ugglas of this year. In other words, he'll get the older viewers' vote)
3. Ulrik Munther - Tell The World I'm Here (in a contest full of male teens, I'd count on his fan base to turn out the strongest)
4. Anton Ewald - Beggin (will get a nice public vote, but juries might not be as enthusiastic. The crying last week certainly won't hurt)
5. Robin Stjernberg - You (I can see him being a hit with the juries)
6. Sean Banan - Copacabanana (will get a ton of public votes, but I can't see the juries getting his shtick -- at least I hope not)
7. Louise Hoffsten - Only The Dead Fish Follow The Stream (will benefit from being the only female, and could go higher. I could also see this getting lost in the shuffle, though)
8. State Of Drama - Falling (may pick up some of the "rock" vote)
9. David Lindgren - Skyline (will suffer the most from the glut of male performers in the final)
10. Ravaillacz - En Riktig Jävla Schlager (I just don't see much more than a pity vote for these guys)
So how do you guys think I did? I guess we'll see tomorrow. What are your top ten? As always, I'll be live blogging on Saturday! No matter what happens, it should be a good show.

Fall Out Boy - My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light 'Em Up)
Posted on 17:15 by Unknown
"I'm just dreaming of tearing you apart"
Oh, how I used to despise Fall Out Boy. The whiny emo-ness of their music was everywhere on American radio for a couple of years. So it's with a hell of a lot of surprise that I write about their comeback single today. The music video for My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light 'Em Up) literally depicts the band's previous albums being burnt in a fire. It's time for a rebirth, and that includes a reinvention of sound. Lead singer Patrick Stump showed what an amazingly soulful and powerful vocalist he is with his solo album, and now he's using that same inflection and style in this track. Ridiculously long title aside, this is not the Fall Out Boy of old. It's funky, industrial and impossibly catchy. If the album turns out to be anything like this, then I might just have to take back all of my former opinions and become an actual fan.

Le Kid - We Are Young
Posted on 13:41 by Unknown
"I wanted you to get me high"
The treats from Sweden just keep coming. This morning, I woke to discover that Le Kid have made an unexpected (at least to me) comeback! This can only be a good thing. We Are Young kicks off right away with a surging electronic beat. Then, as expected from the title, the song builds into a big "seize the moment" hook. It's got some brilliant production, with layered, shouty vocals and a persistent pop energy. Honestly, though, do I really need to describe it? It's new Le Kid! That should be enough. I'm hoping this means a new album is in the works, because so far this and Human Behaviour (from last year) are sounding so promising.

Haim - Falling
Posted on 17:02 by Unknown
"If it gets rough, it's time to get rough"
I'm a little late when it comes to Haim, but better late than never. I fully expect these girls to break out big time as the year goes on. They've already been recognized by the BBC. Their music is a fantastic mix of 80's and 90's hippie-pop... sort of a combination of Paula Cole, Stevie Nicks, 'Til Tuesday and maybe even a bit of Florence + The Machine. It's like nothing on the radio right now, which makes it instantly exciting. All three of the band's singles have been excellent, but this new one could be the song to break them into the mainstream. Falling has incredibly catchy verses and a syncopated chorus that will have you singing along (or at least trying to... the lyrics come pretty quickly). The vocal phrasing and harmonies are quickly becoming their trademark. There's something refreshingly organic about the sound, yet it retains the kind of strong pop elements I always look for. Bring on the album!

Ulrik Munther - Tell The World I'm Here
Posted on 09:48 by Unknown
"All the world is waiting just for me"
Prepare for some general effusiveness, because I'm obsessed with this song. It's broken past the confines of Melodifestivalen for me and has become one of my favorite tracks of the year in a very short time. My relationship with the track went sorta like this:
1. High expectations - since I've liked Munther's work in the past and it was being touted as a possible MF winner
2. Slight disappointment - weirdly, when I heard the track for the first time, I questioned if it was too cheesy or if the melody was too simple. I'd set my expectations sky high -- a dangerous thing to do.
3. Coming to my senses - then I remembered that the best pop songs are simple, and I honed in on the majestic production and the fantastic vocals (particularly in the studio version).
4. Listening. Over and over. - Like, several times a day, which is rare for me. This is the kind of song I like. Big and anthemic and singalong. It's no coincidence that Munther entered to the Ark's Calleth You, Cometh I before debuting it, as the two songs share a similar sound. Nothing can be nearly as good as CYCI, but again... this is my kind of music.
Now, during the past week, it's become clear that Munther has lost his frontrunner status in MF. I would be thrilled if the international jury can bump him through, as I believe this is genuinely the best song in MF 2013. It's uplifting, it's positive, and it's performed by a guy who would represent Sweden well and already has an international fan base. But in the end it doesn't really matter, because his album is out in two days and this song is gonna stick around.

Melodifestivalen 2013: Andra Chansen
Posted on 10:59 by Unknown
Here we are with the second chance round. If I were a betting man, I'd be looking at Anton, Robin and Behrang as having the best chances today, but we'll soon see! Since we've already heard all the songs this week, I hope there are some other entertaining bits to keep the show fresh.
The unofficial Applause-O-Meter: Robin, Behrang, Anton and Martin getting the most love at the outset. Ah, just as expected.
WHOA... stream is dying worse than it's ever died...
ROBIN: Now that the video's back, Robin's here. I do like this song. It's not my favorite tonight, but I wouldn't be sad if it made it through. It's just not as good as Ulrik's, which is in a similar vein. The falsetto is gorgeous, though. And he's really giving it his all.
ERIC: I like this song, too, but I don't think it has a chance. It's just not a winning track. Very nice/pleasant and I definitely listen to it quite often, but it's not for MF. Those piano production flourishes are still to die for, though.
CAROLINE: Two of the "oldie" votes in a row. I love Caroline, and I like this song, but it's not nearly as good as her last entry. Of all the anti-pop entries today, I think she could be the one to benefit from a split in the voting for the teen acts. I hope not, even though I could watch her perform all day. No back-up performers this time, which was kind of weird. I liked them.
BEHRANG: A song that has grown on me immensely. This could do quite well tonight, particularly because it screams Eurovision (and rips off Eurovision). The hook is ridiculously catchy. It's like a tolerable version of Sean Banan. It definitely plays to the crowd. But of course, the crowd aren't the only ones voting.
ERIK/TONE: I just don't like this song. It reminds me of an annoying, cutesy American track that would be played on commercial after commercial until it becomes torture. I think I'm in the minority, but I would be happy with a last-place finish today. It won't happen, though.
ANTON: I think this is my favorite song of the night. I really like Martin's, too, but I've been playing the hell out of this since it was released. Plus, the dancing in the performance is really impressive. Very Michael Jackson without being a total rip-off. I'm watching a lot of people on twitter complaining that there's no "substance" to the song, which is the funniest thing I've ever heard. Do you people know what competition you're watching??
COOKIES: Oh, Cookies 'n' Beans, the sacrificial lambs of tonight's show. I don't see how they could progress any further, but I've been surprised before (several times this year!). It's a pleasant enough song, but not for the competition.
MARTIN: I would love for Martin to go through tonight just based on his past work alone. It helps that the song is excellent. He really needs to boost so that he can release a successful solo album. I fear that it's the kind of pop music that only hardcore pop fans love, leaving out the masses. We'll see.
MY PREDICTIONS:
Top 5: Robin, Caroline, Behrang, Anton, Martin
Top 2: Anton, Behrang
(not feeling at all confident about these predictions, by the way...)
EDIT: Ooh! Peter Joback singing Phantom of the Opera. A pleasant surprise. He's got a stunning voice. Check out his epic duet with Laakso on "Italy Vs. Helsinki" if you haven't. One of the best songs of the last decade.
EDIT: The stream is not liking Mr. Joback... totally cutting out and mangling the sound. This is even worse than last week.
EDIT: Stream is entirely gone. No idea what's happening.
EDIT: Stream is back in the middle of the results, and we've got the top five! All the pop acts made it through! It's like Sweden finally came to its senses! Better late than never, I guess.
Top 5: Robin, Behrang, Erik/Tone, Anton, Martin
Sixth: Caroline
Seventh: Cookies
Eighth: Eric
EDIT: Danny singing Jedward is oddly awesome. If only Jedward were Swedish, they'd be in MF every year. Watch this track soar up itunes after the broadcast. Say what you will about Jedward, but they know how to put on a show. They;re certainly game for anything.
EDIT: More results:
First Duel - Behrang vs. Anton
Whoa... tough, tough, tough. I'm pulling for Anton, but this could be close.
EDIT: I wish these songs would actually have to duel... like perform simultaneously on stage. Anton's vocals sound so much better this time around.
EDIT: More results:
Second Duel - Robin vs. Martin
I would LOVE a Martin victory here, but I think Robin clearly has the edge. We'll see. At least the dreadful Erik/Tone song is out of the running.
Hey, I just realized that the four best songs actually got the most votes! Why didn't this happen throughout the entire competition??
EDIT: And we have our two last finalists for next week!
Anton & Robin
As expected, then. A good result. Would have liked Martin to get through, but very happy for Anton. Now I just hope that both don't take massive chunks out of Ulrik's votes.

Melodifestivalen 2013: Andra Chansen Preview
Posted on 16:51 by Unknown
Ahead of tomorrow's live-blogging, I wanted to write a little about the Andra Chansen ("second chance") round of this year's MF. It's always the week where I'm more excited to see who goes through than to see the performances (since they're basically all repeats). This year, the duel format is--mostly--out, so things could really be up in the air. My favorite song is already in the final (more on that next week), so I'm not too bothered by who makes it through tomorrow, though of course I do have my preferences.
A reminder of the acts competing tomorrow:
1. Cookies 'n' Beans - Burning Flags
2. Eric Gadd - Vi kommer aldrig att förlora
3. Anton Ewald - Beggin
4. Erik Segerstedt & Tone Damli - Hello Goodbye
5. Caroline af Ugglas - Hon har inte
6. Martin Rolinski - In And Out Of Love
7. Robin Stjernberg - You
8. Behrang Miri - Jalla Dansa Sawa
That's the order they made it through, though it seems that Robin will be opening the show while Martin closes.
If I were to place the tracks in order of favorite to least favorite, my list would look something like this:
1. Anton/Martin (too close for me to say, really)
2. Behrang
3. Robin
4. Eric
5. Caroline
6. Erik/Tone and CnB (both of which I simply don't like)
Now, let's take a look at the current itunes chart standings (as of Friday night Pacific Time), which can often be a good indicator of who's popular at the moment. Some have two entries on the chart--the single version and the compilation album version:
ITUNES Rankings
Robin (#8/49)
Behrang (#10/67)
Anton (#21/26)
Martin (#22/117)
Erik/Tone (#34/80)
Eric (#54)
Caroline (#58)
Cookies (#101)
From these, it seems that Robin and Behrang have it in the bag. But don't forget, Anton's track was in the number one position for almost 24 hours after the songs went up. No other andra chansen entry has done that this year. Plus, I'd never discount the "older" vote, which might favor an act like Caroline or Eric, despite their low itunes showings.
Still, I think it's safe to say this will probably end up as a three-horse race between Robin, Behrang and Anton, with Martin offering a possible upset (particularly if he's performing last). And honestly, those are the four best songs this week, so it's as it should be.
Now if Ulrik can just win the whole damn thing, I'll be happy.
